One of the highlights of the Pink City is the Hawa Mahal near the City Palace. In the past, Rajput customs were very strict about women, women were restricted by the purdah system and were not allowed to go to people’s houses and have contact with strangers. In 1799, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh ordered the construction of this special building in order to allow the women of the royal family to observe the daily life and the ceremonies and festivals celebrated in the street without being seen by men. Made of red and pink sandstone and symbolizing the crown shape of Krishna, the building is an architectural masterpiece with more than 900 small windows carved with intricate designs. These windows, or Jharokhas, were designed in such a way that even in the height of summer, air conditioning with cool and light air was created in the building.
Considered to be the oldest museum in Rajasthan, this museum is located in the Ram Niwas Garden and was opened to the public in 1887. The foundation stone of the museum was laid in 1876 by the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward. which was named the museum. The carved arches and beautiful pink sandstone domes are recognizable even from a distance. A rare collection of artworks including paintings, weapons, iron and wood crafts, musical instruments, carpets, clothes and jewelry belonging to different tribes of Rajasthan can be seen in this museum. This building overlooks Amber Fort and Mauta Lake and is located on top of Cheel Ka Teela hill. “Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II” ordered the construction of this fort in the 18th century as a defensive shield to protect Amber Fort and the city of Jaipur.
