Jaipur Travel Guide: The City Palace

Jaipur Travel Guide

Made up of two palaces, Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal, the City Palace is a complex of sublime buildings, interior courtyards and flower gardens. Built under the leadership of Maharaja Jai Singh II, founder of the city, the palace complex is superbly ornamented, with ornate pillars, walls covered with intricate and colorful designs and carved doors. Amber Fort

Jaipur Travel Guide

The city’s main attraction, it is a perfect and magnificent example of Hindu architecture. Originally built of beautiful white and red stones, Amber Fort dominates the city from Eagle Hill, in the Aravalli range. At Amber Fort, after passing the superb Ganesh Gate, you will discover superbly decorated rooms, where members of the royal family lived, as well as the striking Palace of Mirrors or Jai Mandir: the ceilings and walls of this building are inlaid with glass panels and mirrors to reflect the candlelight – a wonderful sight!

Jaigarh & Nahargarh Forts

Jaipur Travel Guide

Neighboring Amber Fort, the forts of Jaigarh (to the north) and Nahargarh (to the south) form a superb defensive complex: we recommend that you visit these two fortresses-palaces as well! Each will give you a superb view of the region, from their ramparts. In Jargarh, an ancient center of cannon production, you can also admire a huge 50-ton cannon, the Jaivana.

The Palace of Winds

Jaipur Travel Guide

The Hawa Mahal is one of the most emblematic monuments of the beautiful pink city! Built in red and pink sandstone, the palace is located not far from the City Palace, on the edge of the royal harem. Its initial goal was to allow its ladies to observe street life and festivities without being seen: they thus respected the practice of “purdah” – a practice preventing men from seeing women. The palace takes its name from the walls and windows which allowed air currents, perfect for cooling the building during the region’s torrid summers.

The Panna Meena Ka Kund

Jaipur Travel Guide

Located in the neighboring town of Amer, a stone’s throw from the Forts, the Panna Meena Ka Kund produces a hypnotic effect on the traveler! Like an Escher painting, the stairs are built in a symmetrical shape, which almost forms a optical illusion.
