So that you don’t completely lose track while browsing through my post, I have created an overview of my TOP sights in India here. On the map you can see that most of the most popular attractions in India are located in the north of the country.

Taj Mahal

Even if you’ve never been to India, you’ve probably heard of India’s landmark: the Taj Mahal Beautiful Sights in India. You can find the Taj Mahal on the outskirts of Agra, on the southern bank of the Yamuna River, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. With a foundation wall measuring 58 by 56 meters, the Taj Mahal is the largest architectural attraction in India. The mausoleum was built on a 100 by 100-meter marble slab and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Not only is the snow-white building itself simply impressive architecturally, but the complex surrounding the Indian landmark is also definitely worth a visit. You can read more about the sights in Agra and the Taj Mahal in this article:

Pink City

The story behind the name Pink City leaves many people shaking their heads. In 1876, Jaipur was to receive a distinguished visitor, namely Crown Prince Albert Eduard, the Prince of Wales. It was then decided to spare no expense or effort and to give the entire city a fresh coat of paint. And not just any color, no, it should be pink. Why exactly is this color? The color pink is considered the color of hospitality in the state of Rajasthan and this is exactly what the city of Jaipur wanted to express. Even though the paint has now faded a little, today’s old town of Jaipur still has a pink glow and is therefore known on everyone’s lips as the Pink City. In addition to the city’s pink facades, you will find numerous other sights in Jaipur. You will find out what these are in the following sections.

Hawa Mahal

If you’re ever out and about in the Pink City, you should also pay a visit to the impressive Hawa Mahal, translated as the Palace of the Winds. The Hawa Mahal can be found in the old town of Jaipur and is part of the huge city palace of the Hindu Indian ruler Maharaja and it seems most beautiful Sights in India. The pleasure palace is said to reflect the lavish lifestyle of the Rajput princes. The Hawa Mahal is a five-story building that is just five to eight meters deep. The facade is made of pink sandstone and is decorated with countless jharoka. In Indian architecture, Jharoka is the name given to covered balconies or balcony bay windows. The actual balcony opening is barred to protect it from views from outside. In addition, the facade contains exactly 953 ornately decorated and barred windows, which allow air circulation and give the Palace of the Winds its name.

Jal Mahal

Also in Jaipur you will find a somewhat more unusual sight, the Jal Mahal, or also known as the Water Palace. The sight of the Jal Mahal is truly unique because the palace is not on some island in the artificially dammed Man Sagar Lake, but literally in the lake. The five-story palace is said to have been built in 1750 by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a hunting lodge on the occasion of the annual duck hunt. Four of the five floors are now completely under water, with only the fifth floor visible. Since construction began, the basement of the Jal Mahal was never habitable due to the changing water levels; the palace was usually only entered via the stairs on the outer wall. Unfortunately, the water palace is not accessible to you, but the sight of the floating palace with its magnificent exterior facade is definitely unique and makes for a special souvenir photo.

Fort Amber (Amer)

Another sight in Jaipur should definitely not be missing from my TOP sights in India. Fort Amber is a fortress built in 1592 out of marble and sandstone and at first glance it looks like it could withstand a war. At second glance, behind the doors of Fort Amber, a completely different world awaits you. The magnificent interior of the fortress is more reminiscent of a luxurious palace. And Amber Fort was once used as such, because Amber Fort was a prince’s palace during the Kachchwaha dynasty. Fort Amber is characterized by the numerous pavilions, inner courtyards and ornate arcades as well as the elaborately designed facade of the fortress with numerous balconies. Fort Amber is full of little surprises like a magnificent hall of mirrors, so go explore!

Jodhpur

Is the color pink not one of your favorite colors? Well, in contrast to the Pink City, how about a city completely in blue? You think I’m kidding you? The city of Jodhpur can also be found in the state of Rajasthan and is also known as the blue city. Here the color blue was chosen to paint the entire city, as blue used to be the color of the Brahmins. The Brahmins are the highest caste in Hinduism and still provide the priests today. You can find the light blue painted houses in the old town of Jodhpur, which stand in a unique contrast to the brown and dreary surroundings. Jodphur is located on the eastern edge of the Thar Desert. So it’s worth not only visiting the alleys of Jodhpur, but also taking a look at the blue city from a little distance and seeing the overall picture as such.

Varanasi

The metropolitan city of Varanasi with its 1.2 million inhabitants is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, directly on the Ganges River and is considered a holy city of Hinduism. Every day, numerous believers make a pilgrimage here to bathe in the holy Ganges, as the river is said to cleanse one of sins. Those who can afford it bring their deceased to the cremation site in Varansi. Because in Hinduism it is said that anyone who is burned in Varanasi and whose ashes are scattered in the Ganges experiences good karma and can escape the eternal cycle of rebirth. The cremations are open to the public and death is omnipresent in Varanasi. Many come to the river to die to ensure that their ashes are scattered in the Ganges. The sight of corpses wrapped in cloths and being carried through the city towards the river is not uncommon here. If you think you don’t want to see this, it’s better to skip this attraction in India. Otherwise I can only say that the spiritual atmosphere of the city is simply unique.

Sarnath

Another holy place for all Buddhists is Sarnath, which you can find around 10 kilometers north of Varansi. This is where Buddha, Siddharta Gutama – the founder of Buddhism – is said to have given his very first sermon after he found enlightenment in Bodhgaya. The sermon took place in the deer park of Sarnath and is therefore also known as the deer sermon. Later, Sarnath became a Buddhist pilgrimage site and one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Buddhism. According to legend, King Ashoka once built 84,000 stupas, a Buddhist structure, and numerous monasteries here. However, it remains just a legend. In Sarnath you can visit various Buddhist temples, two ancient stupas, numerous monastery ruins and statues, an archaeological museum and modern temples. One of the most popular attractions in Sarnath is the Mulaghanda Kuty Vihara Temple, which is located in the famous deer park.

Delhi

Of course, a visit to the country’s capital cannot be missed on your trip through India, which is why the Delhi metropolitan region has also found a place in my TOP sights in India. An incredible 25 million people live here. No wonder the city seems to be bursting at the seams. Here you can plunge into the colorful chaos of the city. Delhi is described above all as loud and hectic, but it also has a lot to offer. Delhi itself actually describes a metropolitan region and consists of the three cities New Delhi, the capital of India, Delhi Cantonment and Delhi proper. You can read about the sights awaiting you in Delhi and important information about the metropolitan region in this article.

Ladakh

For the next highlight of my TOP sights in India, I am sending you high. The Ladakh region is also called the roof of the world and not without reason. Ladakh is located in the middle of the Himalayas at an altitude of over 3,000 meters and is the highest region of Kashmir. The center of Ladakh is the small town of Leh. The landscape is perfect for hiking and is a paradise for all active holidaymakers among you.

Dharamsala

If you have already set off towards the Himalayas, you should also pay a visit to the mountain town of Dharamsala at the foot of the Himalayas. The place is also a perfect starting point for extensive hiking tours through the Himalayas.

Udaipur

In the south of the state of Rajasthan in the Aravlli Mountains you will find the town of Udaipur. The city is one of the most visited on the Indian subcontinent and should therefore not be missing from my TOP sights in India. There are so many lakes in Udaipur that the city is already known as the Venice of the East. Udaipur is surrounded by three artificial lakes. The most famous of all lakes is Lake Pichola with its four islands, which was created in 1362. On one island there is the Jag Niwas Palace, together with the Lake Palace, where you will find a hotel today. On the other islands there are the palaces Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir and the Arsi Vilas. One of the most popular sights in Udaipur itself is the magnificent Maharaja’s Palace, where the Mahrana of Mewar ruled until 1956. Today the palace is used as both a museum and a hotel.

Harmandir Sahib

The Harmandir Sahib Temple is the highest shrine of the Sikhs in Amritsar in the state of Punjab. The Sikh religion is a monotheistic religion that emerged in the 15th century and today has around 27 million followers, the majority of whom live in India. The Harmandir Sahib is also called the Golden Temple as the temple has a huge dome made of gold leaf. The Harmandir Sahib stands on an island in Lake Amrit Sarovar and is surrounded by a breathtaking palace complex. On all four sides of the temple complex you will find open gates, which symbolize the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and their religions. In the temple you can listen to verses from the Holy Book as well as musically accompanied chants that can be heard throughout the temple complex and are guaranteed to give you goosebumps. The Harmandir Sahib is visited by thousands of pilgrims every day. It is said that whoever drinks the holy water around the temple will experience good karma.

Ranthambore National Park

The 282 square kilometer Ranthambhore National Park is located in the state of Rajasthan. Numerous tigers used to live here and the national park was intended to be a showcase reserve for “Project Tiger”. However, this protection program failed and the population of the majestic animals declined in the 1990s due to poaching. Today there are numerous small protection zones in the Ranthambhore National Park where the tigers are allowed to live without danger. Together with the adjacent Kaila Devi Wildlife Sanctuary, the protected zones form the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. In addition to the tigers, other animals such as hyenas, sloth bears, badgers and mongooses are waiting for you in Ranthambhore National Park, as well as breathtaking landscapes with dry rocky areas, dry forests and lakes. Rising above the protected area is the Ranthambhor Fort, which was built in the 10th century and gave the national park its name.

Mumbai

In my TOP of the most beautiful sights in India, the largest city in India, the former Bombay, should of course not be missing. More than 15 million people currently live in Mumbai, and 18 million more live in the suburbs of Mumbai. The metropolis of Mumbai, on the Indian west coast, is considered the economic and cultural center of India. A huge number of sights, museums, restaurants, markets and shopping opportunities await you here. Mumbai also has a lot to offer for a relaxing day on the beach.
