Cochin – Queen of the Arabian Sea.

Kochi, formerly known as Cochin, is a vibrant coastal city in southwestern Kerala, India. It’s often called the “Queen of the Arabian Sea” due to its stunning natural beauty and rich historical significance. The City is blessed with a picturesque coastline, serene backwaters, and lush greenery. The city is surrounded by serene lagoons, offering opportunities for boat rides and houseboat stays. It has a rich history dating back centuries. It was a major trading hub for spices and other goods, attracting traders from around the world. Due to its historical role as a trading centre, Kochi is a cultural melting pot. Here, one can find the influences from various cultures, including Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese. How to reach Cochin (Kochi):

By Air: The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport (COK), located in Nedumbassery, which is about 35 kms away from the city. It is connected to major domestic and international destinations. Several airlines operate daily flights to Kochi from major cities in India and abroad, including Air India, Indigo, Vistara, Emirates, and Etihad.

By Rail: There are 02 railway stations, namely Ernakulam town and Ernakulam junction. The Ernakulam Junction is the largest and busiest. It is well-connected to major Indian cities via express trains like Netravati Express, Kochuveli Garib Rath Express, Kanyakumari Express, Kerala Express, and many more.

By Road: Kochi is well-connected to other cities in Kerala and major cities in South India through national highways. 

By Sea: Kochi is a major port on the Arabian Sea and has regular shipping services to other Indian and international destinations. Kochi is the commercial backbone of Kerala state, with its shipping-related industries like the Cochin port and the Valarpaddam transhipment Terminal. Apart from the former said industries, the Cochin Shipyard, the Cochin Refinery, the LNG Terminal, FACT and tourism are some of the other main industries.

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd: A Kochi Metro is connecting the city to Cochin International Airport. Even though the metro doesn’t connect directly to the airport, it has feeder buses running towards the airport from the metro station and can transfer passengers near the terminal. Metro expansion work is on the go and will shortly be connecting all the major parts of the city.

Places to visit in Cochin:

St. Francis Church: St. Francis Church is a historic church located in Fort Kochi. It is the oldest European church in India, having been built in 1503 by Portuguese explorers. The church was initially a Roman Catholic church, but later came under Dutch rule. It was then converted into a Protestant church during British colonial rule. The church stands as a testament to the early European presence in India, particularly the Portuguese colonial era. As the oldest European church in India, St. Francis Church holds significant historical importance. It has witnessed centuries of political and religious changes in the region. The church exhibits a blend of architectural styles, including Portuguese, Dutch, and Gothic influences. The interior features simple yet elegant decor, with a high-ceilinged nave and stained-glass windows. The church is home to a Dutch cemetery where Dutch soldiers and officials who served in India during the 17th century are buried. The cemetery is a testament to the Dutch colonial presence in the region. It plays an important role in the Christian community of Kochi and serves as a place of worship and spiritual gatherings.

Dutch Palace / Mattancherry Palace: The Dutch Palace, also known as Mattancherry Palace, is a historic palace located in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India. It was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and later gifted to the Raja of Cochin by the Dutch. The palace is a beautiful example of Dutch colonial architecture and houses a collection of murals depicting Hindu mythology and royal portraits. The palace is built in a typical Dutch colonial style, with simple lines, symmetrical design, and whitewashed walls. The interior is adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. The palace is famous for its collection of murals, which depict scenes from Hindu mythology, royal portraits, and everyday life. The murals were created by local artists during the 18th century and offer a glimpse into the cultural and religious traditions of the region. The Dutch Palace also houses a jewellery museum, which showcases a collection of traditional Kerala jewellery, including necklaces, earrings, and anklets. The jewellery is made from gold, silver, and precious stones. The Dutch Palace has a rich history, having served as the residence of the Raja of Cochin for centuries. It is a symbol of the cultural and political influence of the Portuguese and Dutch in the region. The Dutch Palace is an important cultural landmark in Kochi. It is a symbol of the city’s rich history and cultural diversity. The palace was included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Jewish Synagogue: The Jewish Synagogue is also called the Paradesi Synagogue in Cochin. It is a historic synagogue that has been a significant part of the city’s Jewish community for centuries. It was built in 1565 by Jewish merchants from the Persian Gulf, who were known as the “Paradesi Jews.” The synagogue features a unique blend of architectural styles, with elements from Indian, European, and Middle Eastern traditions. The interior is adorned with intricate carvings, frescoes, and stained-glass windows. The synagogue complex includes a prayer hall, a courtyard, and a community centre. The courtyard is a peaceful oasis, with a well and a banyan tree. The synagogue is the centre of the small but vibrant Jewish community in Cochin. The community has preserved its traditions and customs over the centuries, despite facing challenges. The Paradesi Synagogue is a testament to the long history of the Jewish community in India. It is a reminder of the cultural diversity and tolerance that have characterised Kerala for centuries.

Chinese Fishing Nets: The Chinese fishing nets are unique and a distinctive feature of Kochi. These ancient fishing techniques were introduced to the region by Chinese traders centuries ago and have since become a symbol of the city’s maritime heritage. These massive fishing nets, suspended from bamboo poles, have been used for centuries to catch fish from the Arabian Sea. The exact origin of these nets is unknown, but they are believed to have been introduced to Kochi by Chinese traders centuries ago. The nets are made of thick, sturdy ropes and are suspended from bamboo poles that are anchored to the shore. The poles are raised and lowered using a system of pulleys and winches. Fishers stand on platforms attached to the nets and cast them into the sea. As the tide rises and falls, the nets are pulled in and the fish are collected. The Chinese Fishing Nets have become a symbol of Kochi and are a popular tourist attraction. The nets are especially impressive at sunset when the sky is ablaze with colour. The nets are mainly concentrated in Fort Kochi, a historic area of Kochi.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica: The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Cochin is one of the eight Basilicas in India. This heritage edifice of Kerala is also one of the finest and imposing churches in India. It is located close to St. Francis Church, this basilica serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin. It was originally built in 1505 by the Portuguese; later, the British demolished the structure, and João Gomes Ferreira commissioned a new building in 1887, which was consecrated in 1905 and became a basilica in 1984. The Basilica has magnificent Indo-European and Gothic architecture and the grandeur in the use of colours. The basilica is known for its beautiful stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and serene atmosphere. It’s also notable for its significance, being one of the few churches elevated to the status of a basilica by the Pope. 

Visiting: Visitors are allowed all days of the week except Sundays from 08:00 AM to 11:30 AM during the Holy Mass service.

Kadvumbagham Synagogue AKA Cochin Blossoms: It is also known as the Cochin Blossoms and is one of the lesser-known yet significant Jewish synagogues in Kochi, India. It reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the region, showcasing the history of the Jewish community in Kerala. The synagogue features beautiful architectural elements, including intricate wooden carvings and traditional dĂ©cor. The name “Cochin Blossoms” refers to the vibrant history and contributions of the Jewish community to the local culture, particularly in trade and commerce. This synagogue is a testament to the coexistence of diverse communities in Kochi. It is located in Ernakulum, Market Road, and it’s approximately 15 kms / 45 minutes’ drive from Fort Cochin. The synagogue is accessible either by road or by local/private boats from different places in Cochin. The Cochin blossoms is moreover a fish and plant store now and is been looked after by Mr. Elias “Babu” Josephai, who is glad to show around the prayer hall and the premises without any hesitation. Although there are no prayer ceremonies conducted, any visitor is allowed to visit the synagogue even on Saturdays during working hours from 09:30 hrs to 17:00 hrs.

The Dobhi Khana: Dobhi Khana is one of the traditional attractions in Cochin. It’s located near Fort Cochin and is a destination that should be included in a full-day city tour. Dobhi Khana is undertaken by Dobhi Khana Welfare Society, which includes 45 active Members. The washermen or washerwomen use traditional methods for washing clothes (Hand/stone washed and sun dried). A guest can experience the practice at Dobhi Khana while they are in Cochin. It can be considered a miniature version of Mumbai. The driver or a local guide can assist the guest to reach this particular place, and guests can donate something to Dobhi Khana if they are interested. 

No entrance charges are applicable.

Jain Temple at Mattancherry:  The Jain Temple at Mattancherry, Kochi, is a beautiful example of Jain architecture and an important site for the Jain community in the region. Dating back to the 16th century, this temple features intricate woodwork, detailed carvings, and a serene atmosphere. The temple is dedicated to the Tirthankaras, particularly Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), and showcases vibrant murals and sculptures that depict various aspects of Jain philosophy and teachings. The peaceful surroundings and the temple’s historical significance make it a captivating place to visit.

Museums in Cochin:

Indo-Portuguese Museum: 

The Indo-Portuguese Museum is a fascinating museum located in Fort Kochi. It showcases the rich cultural exchange between India and Portugal during the colonial era. The museum houses a vast collection of artefacts, paintings, and sculptures that reflect the influence of Portuguese culture on Indian art and architecture. The museum boasts a diverse collection of artefacts, including Portuguese furniture, porcelain, glassware, and religious items. You can also find Indian art influenced by Portuguese styles, such as oil paintings and sculptures. It is housed within the Bishop’s House. It was established in 2000 by Dr. Joseph Kureethra, the then Bishop of Kochi, to showcase the rich cultural heritage and Portuguese influence in the region. The museum houses a collection of artefacts that reveal the Portuguese legacy in Fort Kochi and the surrounding areas. The collection is divided into five main sections: Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life, and Cathedral. A piece of the altar made in teak, a chasuble, and a processional cross made using wood and silver. Treasure is a collection of jewellery, coins, and other valuables from the Portuguese era. Procession – a variety of objects used in religious processions, such as statues, banners, and musical instruments. Civil life is a collection of everyday objects used by the Portuguese, such as furniture, clothing, and tools. The Cathedral is a collection of artefacts from the St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India.

Kerala Folklore Museum: 

The Kerala Folklore Museum in Kochi is a fascinating institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. It houses a vast collection of artefacts, exhibits, and interactive displays that offer visitors a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the people of Kerala. The museum boasts a comprehensive collection of artefacts related to various aspects of Kerala’s culture, including traditional crafts, textiles, musical instruments, agricultural tools, and household items. The museum features interactive exhibits that allow visitors to experience the traditional way of life firsthand. These exhibits include demonstrations of traditional crafts, music performances, and cultural activities. Hill Palace Museum: 

Hill Palace is a captivating blend of history, culture, and architectural beauty nestled in the Thrippunithura neighbourhood of Kochi. Once the official residence and administrative centre of the Cochin Maharaja, this sprawling palace complex now serves as a fascinating archaeological museum. The palace was built by the Maharaja of Cochin in 1865, and today it is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. The intricate carvings, ornate details, and serene ambience create a captivating atmosphere. The Museum contains a large collection of ornaments of the Cochin royal family, paintings, sculptures, weapons, and coins. The main attraction of the museum is the horse cart gallery and the weapon gallery. In addition to the archaeological museum, Hill Palace also has a heritage museum that showcases the traditional lifestyle and customs of Kerala. Visitors can see antique furniture, textiles, and household items that offer a glimpse into the past.

Kerala History Museum: 

The Kerala History Museum, also known as the State Museum of Kerala, is located in Kochi. It is a prominent cultural institution that showcases the rich historical heritage of the state. The museum houses a significant collection of prehistoric artefacts, including stone tools, pottery, and human remains. These artefacts offer insights into the early history of Kerala. Excursions that can be done from Cochin:

Athirapally & Vazhacall Waterfalls: 

Athirappally and Vazhachal are the well-renowned waterfalls near Cochin, which are 90 Kms one way and a two-hour drive by surface. Athirappally Waterfalls, often referred to as the “Niagara Falls of India,” is a stunning natural wonder located in the Thrissur district. It is one of the largest waterfalls in South India, cascading down from a height of about 80 feet. The main waterfall is a breathtaking sight, with a wide curtain of water crashing down into a deep gorge. The waterfalls are surrounded by lush green forests, creating a serene and picturesque environment. Just a short distance away from Athirappally Falls is Vazhachal Falls, another beautiful waterfall that is worth visiting. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, and various bird species, including endangered species like the Nilgiri langur and the Malabar pied hornbill.. There are several trekking trails in the area, offering opportunities for nature lovers to explore the surrounding forests. Athirappally Waterfalls is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The majestic waterfalls, lush surroundings, and diverse wildlife make it a truly unforgettable experience. The months from October to May are generally considered the best time to visit Athirappally, as the weather is pleasant, and the waterfalls are at their peak flow. While the monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rainfall and can affect the accessibility of the falls, it also creates a vibrant and lush atmosphere.

Kaladi: (45Km from Cochin, 1 hour drive from city & 15minutes from Cochin Airport)

Kaladi is a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre 45km away from Kochi. Kaladi is a small town in the Ernakulam district, renowned as the birthplace of the philosopher and theologian Adi Shankara. It is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially Advaitins, who follow the philosophical school founded by Shankara. The centrepiece of Kaladi is the Adi Shankara Temple, dedicated to the philosopher. The temple complex houses the birthplace of Shankara, a shrine where his idol is enshrined, and a ghat for performing rituals. The Shankara Mutt, a religious institution founded by Shankara’s disciples, is located near the temple. It serves as a centre for religious and educational activities. The Shankara Memorial is a museum dedicated to the life and works of Adi Shankara. It houses a collection of artefacts, books, and documents related to the philosopher. The Adi Shankara University, a renowned educational institution, is located in Kaladi. It offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields. Kaladi offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere, providing a glimpse into the life and teachings of Adi Shankara. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Indian philosophy and spirituality.

Bhoothathankettu & Thattekad Wildlife Sanctuary: (70 Kms from Fort Cochin/ 1.5 hrs drive)

Bhoothathankettu is a picturesque dam located in the Ernakulam district. Built across the Periyar River, it offers stunning views of the surrounding lush greenery and the serene waters of the reservoir. The main attraction is the dam itself, which creates a large reservoir. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding hills and the tranquil waters. There are several picnic spots around the reservoir, perfect for enjoying a leisurely day out with family and friends. The area around Bhoothathankettu offers opportunities for nature walks and exploration. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a renowned bird sanctuary located near Bhoothathankettu. It is home to a diverse range of avian species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Some of the notable bird species found here include the Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Crimson-throated Barbet, and the Great Hornbill. Both Bhoothathankettu and Thattekad Bird Sanctuary are excellent destinations for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful getaway. They offer a combination of scenic beauty, recreational activities, and wildlife encounters.

Kodanad: (50Kms from Cochin/ 1.5hrs drive)

It is located in the high ranges on the southern bank of the Periyar. Kodanad is renowned as the largest centre for training elephants in South India. Elephants are specially trained here for riding and do work that humans can’t, like transporting logs, exploring the jungles, etc.

The visiting hours are from 08:00 to 17:00. Mondays are holidays. Entrance fee: Rs.100 for Foreigners and Rs.10 for Indians.

Guruvayoor Temple: (110Kms from Cochin/ 2.5 hrs drive)

A Divine Abode in Kerala. Guruvayur Temple is one of the most revered Hindu temples in India, located in Guruvayur. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the temple is equivalent to the Vaikuntha, the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu. It is a major pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Krishna, particularly those who follow the Vaishnava tradition. The main deity of the temple is Lord Guruvayurappan, a form of Lord Krishna. The idol is believed to be self-manifested and is considered to be very powerful. The temple’s gopuram (tower) is a magnificent structure adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple hosts several major festivals throughout the year, including Ekadashi, Guruvayur Utsavam, and Ashtami Rohini. A unique ritual called Chuttuvilakku takes place every evening, where devotees offer lighted lamps around the temple. The Nairalandam is a traditional Kerala-style dining hall where devotees can enjoy vegetarian meals prepared in the temple kitchen. Guruvayur Temple is considered a holy place for Hindus, and devotees believe that visiting the temple can bring blessings and spiritual enlightenment.

Special Note: Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple. One needs to follow the dress code for this temple – women should wear only a sari, and men should wear only a dhoti.

3 kms from the temple is the famous Punnathurkotta (Anakottil – Elephant stable), which is one of the largest elephant sanctuaries all over the world.

Punnathoor Kotta (Anakottil – Elephant stable)

Punnathoor Kotta is the only elephant sanctuary of its kind in Kerala. The Kotta, which was once the palace of a local ruler, was later made to house the elephants belonging to Guruvayoor temple, and was renamed as Anakkotta (meaning ‘Elephant Fort’). It is run under the administration of Guruvayoor Dewasom. At present, the Kota houses 64 elephants. The elephants are brought here as ritual offerings made by the devotees of Lord Guruvayurappa. This system is also used to train the elephants to serve Lord Krishna as well as participate in festivals that occur throughout the year. The compound also has a Naalu kettu( a traditional rectangular home with a central courtyard), which belonged to the Punnathoor Raja.

Malayattoor Church: (50 Kms from Cochin/ 1.5 hrs drive)

Malayattoor Church is a prominent Christian pilgrimage centre located in Malayattoor. It is believed to be one of the earliest churches established by Saint Thomas the Apostle. The church is believed to be founded by Saint Thomas the Apostle in the 5th century AD, making it one of the oldest Christian churches in India. Malayattoor is a popular pilgrimage destination for Christians, particularly those who follow the Syro-Malabar tradition. Thousands of pilgrims visit the church during the Easter season. The church’s architecture is a blend of traditional Kerala style and European influences. It features a unique gopuram (tower) with intricate carvings and sculptures. The church is believed to house several relics of Saint Thomas, including a piece of his cross and a footprint in a rock. There is a holy spring on the hilltop above the church, believed to have healing powers. The church celebrates several annual festivals, including the Malayattoor Perunal (Easter festival), which attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Kumbalangi Village: (20Kms from Cochin/30mins drive)

Kumbalangi is a small backwater village in Ernakulam District. It is declared as the first model fisheries and tourism village of India, which has its own tradition and culture. Most of the villagers are engaged in agriculture and fishing. A visitor can experience a variety of village activities in Kallanchery, which is a satellite island of Kumbalangi. Some of the activities going around here are Coir yam processing, Copra processing, Crab Farming, Chinese net operation, Net making, Weaving Coconut Leaves, Country Boating, Casting of nets, Grouping of fish, etc. Kumbalangi has embraced eco-tourism, promoting sustainable practices and preserving the local environment.

Pallipuram Fort: ( 32 KM north-west of Cochin)

Pallipuram Fort is a historic Portuguese fort & was built by the Portuguese in 1503. It is one of the oldest European forts in India and offers a glimpse into the region’s colonial past. It was later captured by the Dutch and then the British. The Dutch captured the fort in 1661 and sold it to the state of Travancore in 1789. This fort is situated in the northern extremity of the Vypin Island at Pallipuram. Near this fort, Munambam fishing harbour can also be seen. The fort features a typical European style of architecture, with bastions, ramparts, and a moat. The fort houses a small museum that showcases artefacts and exhibits related to the fort’s history. The fort offers panoramic views of the Kochi harbour and the surrounding areas. Pallipuram Fort is an important historical landmark in Kerala, representing the colonial era and the influence of European powers in the region. A Dutch cemetery is located within the fort complex, preserving the graves of Dutch soldiers and officials.

Kanjiramattom Mosque:

Kanjiramattom is 30 km away from Kochi, and is a prominent Islamic place of worship located in Kanjiramattom, a suburb of Kochi. It is believed that the mosque was erected over the mortal remains of a Muslim saint, Sheikh Parid. Another great Muslim saint, Baver, is supposed to have prayed here and attained salvation. The mosque features a distinctive architectural style that combines elements of traditional Kerala architecture with Islamic design. Kanjiramattom Mosque has a rich history, dating back several centuries. It is believed to have been established during the period of the Kochi Kingdom. The mosque serves as a community hub for Muslims in the area, organising various religious and cultural activities. The mosque offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, providing a place for Muslims to pray and connect with their faith. Kanjiramattom Mosque is an important religious centre for Muslims in Kochi and the surrounding region.

Chottanikara Bhagavathy Temple: 

Chottanikara Bhagavathy Temple is one of the most celebrated Hindu shrines of Kerala. The temple is located in Chottanikkara town, 17 kms away from Ernakulam. It is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (Shakti) & major pilgrimage site for devotees of the Goddess, particularly during the festival of Navaratri. The temple’s main deity is Goddess Bhagavathy, who is believed to be a manifestation of Mahadevi (the Great Goddess), particularly those seeking blessings for health, wealth, and protection., The annual festival here is celebrated in the month of Kumbha (February – March). ‘Maasi Magam’, coinciding with the full moon. Chottanikara Bhagavathy Temple is considered a holy place for Hindus, and devotees believe that visiting the temple can bring blessings and spiritual enlightenment.

Shiva Temple (Ernakulathappan Temple) 

Ernakulam Siva Temple is situated in the heart of Ernakulam city and is easily accessible. The annual festival usually falls during January /February and is spread over 8 days. The uthsavom (Festival) starts with Kodiyettam (hoisting of the temple flag) on the first day evening. On the seventh day, there is Pakalpooram, when the deity is taken out in procession with caparisoned elephants with Panchavadyam (Five Musical instruments) and finally terminating at Durbar Hall Ground after the famous Pandimelam (Local musical instrument) and evening colourful fireworks. On the final day, around evening, in a solemn ceremony, the flag is lowered and the deity is then taken for the Arattu (holy bath) in the nearby temple tank. After that starts the famous Arattu procession with the accompaniment of Panchavadyam. The procession terminates at the Durbar Hall Ground. The grand fireworks then bring the curtain down on this weeklong festival.

St. George Church – Edappally: The Church is located 11 kilometres from the city.

St. George Forane Church, locally known as Edappally Church, is a Catholic pilgrimage church in Edappally, Kochi. It is considered Asia’s largest shrine dedicated to Saint George, and about five million people visit it every year. This Roman Catholic Church was built in 595 AD on land donated by the ruler of Edappally. It is considered one of the oldest Churches in Kerala. A new Church building was constructed in 1080 AD. The church has undergone many renovations since its construction, including the integration of the Virgin’s picture surrounded by sculptures and angels with the altar, and the addition of a painting of Heaven behind the altar. The church showcases a blend of traditional Kerala architecture and European influences, featuring whitewashed collonaded facades, an ornate campanile, and a gilded altar. A prominent statue of St. George mounted on his horse, spearing the dragon, is also seen here. The church feast is conducted in the months of April-May and attracts thousands of devotees. 

Basilica of Our Lady, Vallarpadam:

A major pilgrim centre for Christians, the Church of Our Lady of Ransom is one of the oldest European Churches in India, built by the Portuguese Missionaries. The church dedicated to the Holy Mary of Vallarpadam, popularly known as ‘Vallarapadath Amma’, is located in the middle of Vallarpadam, a small idyllic island on the Vembanad Lake,5km north of the mainland Kochi (Ernakulam), Kerala. The Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam, also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Vallarpadam, is a prominent Roman Catholic church located on Vallarpadam Island in Kochi, Kerala, India. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Ransom and is a major pilgrimage site for Catholics, especially those seeking blessings for health and healing. The basilica was established in 1704 by the Portuguese and later rebuilt in the Gothic style. It is believed to be the first basilica in India. The guide will join the guest at the rendezvous point and start the tour, The tour is done on foot. The guests will be able to experience the local life of the people as well during the tour. The guest can also watch the process of spices sorting and packing, and the guide explains the same.

Cochin Royal Heritage Tour in Thripunithura: On this trail, we explore the origins of the Cochin Royal Family, and the rise and fall in their fortunes under the Europeans before their eventual union with India. We look at their role in developing the modern city of Kochi and their contributions in the field of art, language, education and medicine. Starting from the Hill Palace, the last seat of power of the Rajahs, we move on to the residential quarter, which showcases the best in traditional and colonial architecture. High tea with present-day members of the family is how we end the trail.

Kudumbasree Women Empowerment Program at Paravoor (for groups only): Kudumbasree is the poverty eradication and women empowerment program implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the government of Kerala. The name Kudumbasree in the Malayalam language means Prosperity of the family. Chendamangalam village is located 22 kms north of Cochin drive through 45 minutes. Around 11 am, you reach the village and a 10-minute walk to the venue, an ancestral Tharavadu. The women of Kudumbasree welcome you with a garland and chutty. They will refresh you with tender coconut, followed by an introduction and familiarisation. Feast your eyes on the traditional dance THIRUVATHIRA, followed by a cooking demonstration. Then SADYA a traditional lunch on banana leaves with Fish Mappas and Appam as a starter, and a variety of vegetable curries with rice and papad, then dessert. Visit the courtyard and the farm, also experience the Kudumbasree activities, including saree and dhoti wearing. 10 10-minute walk through the village to board the vehicle. On the way, stop and visit a handloom factory run by a society where the weavers are women. The total duration of the program is 4 hrs. This program is being operated for groups, and the benefit goes to the women of Kudumbasree. We can accommodate 32 pax at a time.
  1. Wake Up Cochin: Mode of tour by Tuk Tuk from Fort Cochin. An introduction tour of Cochin city. Where a tourist can see a part of the life of the local, which happens behind the curtain. It’s to 3-hour tour, covering the following attractions.   1. Mattancheri Chronicles: Mattancheri is mostly known for its Bazaar, the Jewish settlement and the Cochin Rajah’s palace. But other communities we have the Mappilas (Arab Muslims) who were traders with a lineage going back at least 2,000 years. The Konkanis (from India’s western coast) were moneylenders and bankers who supported the local trade. The Gujaratis (from the state of Gujarat) and the Cutchi Memons (from Kutch in Rajasthan) were again influential traders. The Hindu Malayalis were the labour class, while the Latin Christians were fishermen. The Tamil Brahmins worked as moneylenders, and some were cooks for the Royal Families. And although Spices were an important commodity for trade, other commodities like dry fruits, cloth, tea, opium, oil, herbs, perfume, etc., were also much in demand. On this tour, we learn about some of the communities that settled in Mattancherry over the centuries and how they added to the cosmopolitan spirit and culture of this heritage quarter. Along the way, we will sample some food distinct to these communities, which by themselves reveal their close connection to the land that they call home and their trade.
