  • On the road in the still largely unknown far northeast of India

The provinces located in northeast India between Bhutan, Tibet, Myanmar, and Bangladesh are connected to the rest of the country only by a narrow corridor. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland are among the least visited and least developed parts of India. A trip here provides deep insights into a little-known India: We visit secluded ethnic groups and discover the diverse landscapes with jungle forests and tea plantations that produce first-class tea. The peoples in these areas live culturally independent lives and speak their own languages. We'll also explore Kaziranga National Park in Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with rare wildlife. This trip is aimed at curious travellers who want to experience pristine, untouched India and are willing to forgo luxury for authentic encounters.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival in Delhi IGI Airport, meet & greet by our representative and are transferred to your prebooked hotel. After lunch, we begin a tour of the Indian capital. We set out to explore "Old Delhi," with its narrow, unpaved streets, countless people, and inexpensive and colorful bazaars that keep the traditional handicrafts for which Delhi has always been famous alive. Passing the Red Fort, we swap our cars for cycle rickshaws that take us to the heart of Chandini Chowk (Silver Square – named after the silver traders). Through alleys that seem to become increasingly narrow, we reach the Jama Masjid, the largest Muslim Mosque in India. We then visit the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in the heart of New Delhi. The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is the most important Sikh Gurudwara in Delhi. As in all Sikh Gurudwaras, the concept of "Langar" (communal meal) is practiced, and all people, regardless of race or religion, can eat in the Gurudwara kitchen (Langar hall). Overnight in Delhi.

Early morning transfer to the New Delhi airport and flight to Guwahati. On our way to Kaziranga National Park (250 km, approx. 5 hours), we visit the Kamakhya Temple, an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. Overnight at Kaziranga National Park.

The 430-square-kilometer national park in the eastern state of Assam is one of the last strongholds of the endangered Great Indian Rhinoceros, whose population is said to have declined to just 12 animals in the 1950s, but has since risen to around 1,500. Kaziranga's breathtakingly beautiful landscape encompasses savannah grasslands, the green and fertile plains of the Brahmaputra River, and evergreen, moist deciduous and swamp forests. It is also a refuge for over 300 species of birds, as well as wild elephants, Asian wild buffalo, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and various deer species. A morning and evening jeep safari awaits us in the park.

Another safari in the national park follows in the morning. Afterwards, we continue to Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. (200 km, approx. 5 hours)

After breakfast, visit the Buddhist gompa of Itanagar, a new, beautiful shrine with yellow roofs. It stands on well-manicured grounds behind a stupo tree planted by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We also visit the local market, where locals in traditional costume sell local produce. We then travel to Ziro (120 km, approx. 3 hours) in the territory of the Apatani tribe. The Apatani live in perfect harmony with nature and are known for their rice-growing culture.

Day 6 :
Ziro

Today we experience the Bori Boat Festival in Raga. The Hill Miri tribe celebrates for three days to welcome spring and pray for a successful harvest. The festival is organized by the community. The young members of the Hill Miri tribe carry out the necessary organizational tasks under the guidance of the elders. (Please let us know, we will suggest you the exact date of festival, visits to the villages of Hong and Hari.)

We spend the morning in the Apatani village of Haro and have the opportunity to interact with the locals. Later, we set off for Majuli Island (160 km, approx. 5 hours) and cross the Subansari River by local ferry.

Majuli, the largest river island in the world, is famous for its twenty-two "satras." These are Hindu Vaishnev monasteries (devotees of Lord Vishnu) that serve as centers of Assamese art. Worship of Lord Vishnu is practiced through dance, music, and poetry. The satras take in and educate young men. Their daily routine includes working in the fields, tending livestock, prayers, discussions, and studies. The satras also maintain certain arts and crafts traditions that can only be found here today. In Natun Samugrisatra, for example, the craft of mask-making is still practiced; Kamlabarisatra still produces the most beautiful boats. We will also explore the villages of the Mishing tribes who live on this island.

After breakfast, we take the public ferry to Neematighat (depending on water levels, the crossing takes 1 to 2 hours). We continue to Sibsagar (65 km, approx. 2 hours), the home of the Ahoms, who came from Yunnan, China, in the 13th century. We visit, among other places, the Shiva Dol, a Shiva temple with the tallest Shiva temple tower in India, and the royal Ahom monuments: Rang Ghar and Kareng Ghar.

Today marks our entry into Nagaland. Passing beautiful tea plantations, we drive to Mon (140 km, approx. 4-5 hours). After completing the entry formalities at the border, we pay a visit to the village king.

Day 11 :
Mon

Time to explore the Longwa and Hongo villages and meet the Konyak tribe. The Konyak's days of headhunting are over, and we can admire their tattooed warriors. (Date -02: Aoling Festival)

On our way to Dibrugarh (approx. 5-6 hours), we visit Charaideo Maidam, the sacred burial site of the Ahom kings and queens and the home of the Ahom ancestral gods.

In the morning, we visit a tea garden before heading to the airport for our return flight to Delhi and transfer to our hotel. Overnight at Delhi

After breakfast at hotel, commence New Delhi sightseeing. Why not take advantage of this opportunity to do some last-minute sightseeing or wander through the bazaars and pick up a few last souvenirs? At Dilli Haat Market, you'll find treasures of Indian textiles for home and clothing. Are you looking for some peace? In the midst of the capital's bustle, Lodhi Garden offers a peaceful sanctuary.

Depending on your flight schedule, your private driver will escort you to the airport. Our services end here. Don't hesitate to contact one of our North India travel experts, who will be delighted to answer your every question and request.

We can customize this trip by adding several modules.
