Leh and the Indus Valley
About 15 km southeast of Leh we find Shey – the former capital of Ladakh. In the middle of the 19th century, the royal family was expelled from here – a small monastery, a large number of chorten and the ruins of the former palace, which we visit, have remained.
From here we continue to Thiksey with his well-known and probably the most photographed monastery in Ladakh – captivating its architecture and its golden cross-flowering, which is mostly illuminated by the temple. A unique view is afforded to visitors from the roof terrace of the monastery down to the valley, when the view sweeps over the fields to the snow-capped mountains.
