Temples of Khajuraho
The town of Khajuraho, which has around 20,000 inhabitants, is located in the northern Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and is particularly well-known and popular due to the temple district located here, which was built in the 10th and 11th centuries and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A particular highlight of the town is the week-long dance festival that takes place every year in February or March. The best dancers in India are invited to this event and they send the audience on a musical journey through the country.
A visit to the town and the impressive temples is worthwhile in any case, even if the journey is a little difficult, as Khajuraho is located off the main traffic routes and is not connected to the rail network. Bus trips are therefore an alternative, but take some time due to the poor roads. In order to meet the high demand from tourists, the town has its own airport, from which there are connections to the cities of Varanasi, Delhi, Kathmandu and Agra.
